When a small number of birds act together, they each influence birds nearby. If the innovative birds are widely dispersed enough, they can shift the entire flock's direction.
Interesting factoid. But what does this have to do with serious professionals who step up and make things happen?
First, we depend on innovators to convert dreams and noble intentions into reality. Bold pronouncements, exciting visions and lofty values set forth what’s needed to meet the demands of tougher regulatory and reimbursement standards, more complex technology, more sophisticated science and more concern about financial and environmental sustainability. But bold pronouncements don't accomplish much, unless the flock actually changes their trajectory and figures out how to execute.
To influence flocks, go viral. Infect as many molecular structures as you can with thought-leadership that makes a difference, one critical event and one business decision at a time. Whether you're an in safety, marketing, finance, regulatory affairs or project management or supply chain management — get innovators dispersed and placed in as many product teams, task forces, account teams and other places where the work gets done as possible.
Third, equip innovators to move their teams 10° left or right — with courage and uplifting, ennobling leadership skills. Help them gird themselves for a healthy debate and a vigorous cross-functional collaboration. Help them sharpen their listening skills, their business savvy, their understanding of other functions and disciplines. Help them to add value and make a difference, so colleagues say, "We can't take this decision without your thought-leader at the table."
Remember -- in matrix structures and molecular teams, gaining power is about finding the right spread in your support base, rather than creating a rock-solid peak to the pyramid. It's about amplifying your voice, so the same message is repeated and reinforced 100-fold, in dozens of different cadences, rhythms and intonations. It's about encoding the message, so anyone can step up and take the lead, even if the bird at the front of the flock gets tired.
